Piracy: It's Our Concern
According to Wikipedia piracy is an act of robbery or
criminal violence at sea. Here, we would like to discuss about a most
common criminal violence at our music industry. Music piracy in
Bangladesh causes losses of US$180 Million. Only 5 to 10 percent of the
total music market consists of legitimate sales. What is happening at
our music industry? Why are we saying it a crime?
First
of all, piracy is a term which is used when someone enjoys one’s
creativity or work without permission or for free. In our music
industry, piracy is a curse. Because of this, our singers and the people
relating to this profession are suffering a lot. Many of them have left
the profession already. Some of them are thinking to leave.
However,
according to information, most of the retail stores in Bangladesh,
selling audio or video products are having computers inside their
outlets, through which they are making fake copies of the music, drama
and movie albums. Though RAB is continuing offensives on pirates, it is
yet to take drastic steps in seizing computers from the outlets of
retailers of audio and video products.
Being hugely
affected by the massive piracy of various musical and non-musical
albums, as well as un-even behavior of the mobile phone operators, most
of the leading music companies in Bangladesh have stopped releasing any
albums for months, while a large number of Bangladeshi singers are
failing to release their new albums. Terming the situation as "volatile"
members of Bangladeshi film and music industry said, the government
needs to put special emphasis on this issue and instruct police and
Rapid Action Battalion to continue raids on various music retailers in
the country and seize pirated copies of local and foreign albums and
movies. Moreover, strict laws should be made in order to stop the video
and audio pirates from getting bails, once they are arrested by the
members of the law enforcing agencies.
